The Department of National Parks and the State Department of Agriculture are the primary environmental protection authorities in the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic suffers from environmental issues such as deforestation, water supply, and soil erosion, and because soil erosion runs into the sea, it harms the country's coral reefs.

UN sources say the country has lost 20,000 hectares of forest land a year since 1993, mostly to commercial interests. To address the negative impacts of indiscriminate logging by commercial growers and farmers, as well as the loss of enormous tracts of forest by fire, tree logging was prohibited in 1967. However, many farmers continue to take down trees in secret in order to free up more space for cultivation. In mountainous places, soil erosion occurs as a result of a mix of precipitation and land use. The country has 21 cubic meters of renewable water resources, with agriculture using 89% of it. Approximately 97% of the population has access to safe drinking water. Water pollution is caused by mining, as well as industrial and agricultural activities.
